In 1922 the company went on the air with WJAR radio, and in 1949 WJAR-TV became Rhode Island's first television station.

Over the next 30 years, the Outlet Company acquired additional television stations throughout the country. In November of 1980, the department store, which had grown to occupy an entire city block in downtown Providence, was sold. Outlet Communications was now solely involved in commercial broadcasting.

WJAR was purchased by NBC in February 1996 and was one of 14 stations owned and operated by the network for 10 years.

NBC 10 marked another milestone in its long history with the beginning of digital broadcasts in April 2004. WJAR-DT broadcasts on channel 51. The station's digital signal is also available to Cox Cable high-definition subscribers on channel 700.

NBC Universal announced in April 2006 that it was selling NBC 10 and three other stations to Virginia-based Media General. The acquisition was completed on June 26, 2006. The station continues to be the leader in news and information for Southern New England.

Take exit 14B towards Cranston, which puts you on Route 37 west. Take exit 3 for Pontiac Avenue. Take a left at the light at the bottom of the ramp. Continue on Pontiac Avenue and turn left at the third traffic light, which is Kenney Drive. We're the second building on the right.

Take exit 14 and bear right towards Cranston, which puts you on Route 37 west. Take exit 3 for Pontiac Avenue. Take a left at the light at the bottom of the ramp. Continue on Pontiac Avenue and turn left at the third traffic light, which is Kenney Drive. We're the second building on the right.

NBC 10 News at 6 p.m. is simulcast on local radio stations for the convenience of southern New Englanders who are commuting or can't be near a television. You can listen on WPRO 630 AM and 99.7 FM in Providence and WSAR 1480 AM in Fall River.

How do I obtain a copy?
Simply complete the Video Sales Waiver. Be sure to include the date and time of the newscast your story appeared as well as your choice of format (VHS or DVD). Be sure to sign the waiver, include a check (payable to WJAR-TV) in the amount of $30.00 (includes shipping and handling) and send to:

Do you offer copies of news stories?
Yes, copies of news stories are available for purchase; however WJAR reserves the right to deny a request without reason for any footage. Also, copies of entire newscasts are not offered under this program.

Can I request a news story that aired in 2002?
Unfortunately, we cannot honor requests that aired prior to 1/1/03, except for our Timelines programs that are available for sale.

Can I request a copy of a news story for a legal matter?
No -- The waiver firmly states that copies cannot be used for litigation/legal purposes. These type of copies need to be subpoenaed. If you require copies for legal purposes, please call 401-455-9188. for more information.

Does NBC 10 take credit cards?
No, sorry. We cannot process credit cards at this time.

My check was returned, what happened?
When a check is returned, we include a note explaining why; but here are a few things to look out for:

The check was not signed.

The check was written for the wrong amount. The cost is $30.00 per story request.

The waiver/request was not signed.

The waiver/request did not indicate the date, show, or story title.

The story requested is not included in our program.
